Install the OggVorbis Plug-In into Your WINamp MP3 Player
Ogg Vorbis is an open source audio encoding and streaming technology. And since it is still in development, there isn't an actual player for this file type. For now we have to use "plug-ins." In case you haven't had the pleasure, plug-ins are software components that can be added to an existing computer application to make it do something extra that the application alone cannot do. We'd prefer not to have to use plug-ins, but it's par for the course in the wild openly-developed software landscape. And the quicker the software is developed the sooner we'll have nifty clients to use instead of plug-ins. The musicians out there can compare a plug-in to a guitar players "stomp box" distortion pedal or flange pedal. Got it? All righty.
Another minor catch is that there are only 2 plug-ins for the the two most popular MP3 players out there: one for WINamp and one Sonique for Windows.
Step 1 ) If you haven't yet, download the WINamp MP3 player. If you already have WINamp installed on your computer go to step#2.
a -- A Save window will open. Choose the option "Run this program from its current location" then hit the "OK" button.
b -- Select the Regular installation option.
Step 2 ) Get the Ogg Vorbis plug-in for the WINamp player.
Step 3 ) Double-click on the "oggwinamp.zip" file that you now have on your desktop. You should be looking at this. Highlight the filename and hit the Extract button. Put the file into the plug-ins folder that should be located in the WINamp folder (on your C: drive).
You're ready to rock! Drag-and-drop that .ogg file that you encoded onto your WINamp player. It should start playing, and you should notice higher fidelity than if it were playing an MP3 file. If it doesn't work, look in your WINamp player's Preferences menu to see if the Ogg Vorbis plug-in installation was successful. It should look like this.
