How to Upload Flash Files to a Server
If you are a beginning web developer or a musician posting work onto the Internet so others may download it, you may not have an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program. You need one to transfer the files from your desktop to a Web server for public availability.

FOR MACS
Fetch 1.0 was written in the summer of 1989 in order to provide a file transfer solution for Macs connected to Dartmouth's various host operating systems and to take advantage of Dartmouth's newly acquired Internet connection. Fetch is free for non-profit organizations and educational organizations and $25 for the general public.

  1. Download the Fetch ftp program here.
  2. Double click on the Installer icon.
  3. Pick the General Installation selection and choose Install.
  4. You will be asked where to install the program. Install the program in the same folder as your Web browser.
  5. Now double-click on the Fetch folder you have installed. You are here. Double-click on the Fetch icon.
  6. Now it's time to connect to your server. Enter you server location, user name and password. In this example the server is joe.she.net.
  7. Now that you are hooked up to your server, look under the "Remote" menu at the top of your screen and select the option "Put folders or files". At the top of the window that opens there is a click and drag menu to choose the folder you want to go to. Go there. Now choose which file you want to upload to your server. Double click on it or choose the "add" button. Now hit "done".
  8. All the multi-media media files -- .mp3, .swf, .wav. .aif, .rmf) should be uploaded as "raw data." So when the options menu pops up, always make a habit of choosing "text" in the Text Files option and "raw data" for multimedia files.
  9. Some examples of basic html that will give you a page and a link to enable people to download your creations off of the Internet that will look like this.

That's it! The files should now be accessible for download or viewing. Just link to them in an HTML document or email, using the proper filepath.
