How to Upload Beatnik .rmf Files to a Server
If you are a beginning Web developer or a musician posting work onto the Internet so others may download it, you may not have an FTP (file transfer protocol) program. You need one to transfer the files from your desktop to a webserver for public availability.
For Macs
Fetch 1.0 was written in the summer of 1989 in order to provide a file transfer solution for Macs connected to Dartmouth's various host operating systems and to take advantage of Dartmouth's newly acquired Internet connection. Fetch is free for nonprofit organizations and educational organizations and $25 for the general public.
- Download the Fetch program.
- Double-click on the Installer icon.
- Pick the General Installation selection and choose Install.
- The installer will ask where you want the program. Install the program
in the
same folder as your webbrowser.
- Now double-click on your newly installed Fetch folder to open it. Double-click on the Fetch
icon.
- Now it's time to connect to your server.
Enter your server location, user name, and
password. In this example, the server is joe.she.net.
- Now that you are hooked up to your
server, look under the Remote menu at the top of your screen and select the
option Put folders or files. At the top of the window that opens there is a click and drag menu where you can choose the folder you want to go to. Go there. Now choose which file you want to upload to your server. Double-click on it or click the Add button. Now hit Done.
- All multi-media media files -- .mp3, .swf, .wav, .aif, .rmf should be uploaded as "raw data." So when the Options menu pops up,
make a habit of choosing "text" in the Text Files option and "raw
data" for multimedia files.
- Last but not least, if you don't already know HTML you'll need to know enough basic
HTML
to make a page and a link that will look like thisso people can
download your creations off the Internet.
That's it! The files should now be accessible for download or viewing.
Just link to them in an HTML document or email, using the proper filepath.
For PCs
Here are some links to some useful progams. All of these programs have 30-day trials, and cost $35.00 max after that. Once you have downloaded an FTP client application for your PC, follow the instructions below to FTP your files to a server so they can be viewed on the World Wide Web.
