MIDI File/Song Examples

There are three examples embedded in this page. The first uses the General MIDI sounds. The second shows how the same MIDI information with a little additional programming can let you use the custom, or Special Instruments, Beatnik synth sounds. The third example is a complete 4-minute song that uses the Special Instuments bank.

The Beatnik Editor tutorial has step-by-step instructions on how to use the Beatnik Editor to make great-sounding MIDI songs with a MIDI sequencer.

We are using the

display=song
attribute within the HTML embed tag to make the Play, Pause, and Stop buttons. To view how these are embedded, simply use the View Source function of your browser.

The player can easily be hidden using the HTML tag attribute

hidden=true
within the embed tag.

example 1
This is what you get if you just convert your General MIDI file without setting the proper MIDI controllers to utilize the custom Beatnik synthesizer sound banks. It's considerably cleaner than QuickTime. (Be sure to only use one player at a time). This example does not have the encrypted copyright imformation like the other examples below. The capability to enter copyright information is a handy feature.

example 2
Here's the same mix with some of the custom Beatnik sounds: a big improvement.

example 3
Here's another MIDI file with the custom Beatnik sounds.

If you would like to make your own MIDI files to play with the Beatnik Player, you need a MIDI sequencer. If you have a MIDI sequencer, the tutorial How to Prepare Your MIDI File for the Beatnik Editor will tell you how to use it together with the Beatnik Editor.
